Dear Mr. Schollmeyer:

In response to your letter of February 13, 2003 regarding the wearing of safety glasses, your understanding is correct. Safety glasses must be worn at all times irregardless of the weather conditions.

Your questions as to where you should direct your safety concerns has not changed either. You can ask any Supervisor or Safety Coordinator for an interpretation of the safety rules.

RE: Safety Glasses and Inclement weather

February 13, 2003

Mr. Maze, attached is a notice dated February 7, 2003 from Northwest Safety Coordinator Dale Jeremiah on BNSF stationary regarding safety glasses and inclement weather.

I just want to confirm the instruction are as stated, employees with 20/20 vision are required to perform their duties with impaired vision in a rainstorm.

If that is correct, should future correspondence regarding interpretation of safety rules be addressed to the Safety Coordinator?

Yours Truly,

/s/JL Schollmeyer
Vice General Chairman

SUBJECT: Safety glasses/inclement weather February 7, 2003
To All  TY&E Employees

There has been some confusion over whether we have to wear safety glasses during inclement weather. At one time, there was an old Pacific Division Notice stating we did not have to wear safety glasses during inclement weather.

This issue was raised at the Seattle Safety Committee meeting last month and forwarded to the General Manager for clarification.

It is the policy of the Northwest Division that safety glasses are required, regardless of weather conditions.

If your vision becomes distorted because of weather conditions, stop the movement and clean your glasses.

Yes, I know, our employer no longer provides lens cleaning towelettes in the crew packs, so pick up a few at your on duty location. There are also defogger towelettes available, called Fog-Fixer by Encon Safety Products.
