RE: Deadhead by train |
May 31, 2000 |
Mr. Shea, in review of your letter dated May 18, 2000. I am very skeptical of your assurances that it is safe to deadhead in an enter-through the nose engine four deep in consist. You say the employees can even have windows open for comfort. Your statement reminds me of the congressional hearings on smoking.
I have many questions concerning the testing procedures.
1. Was an air quality samples collected on actual trains when engines are under full load?
2. Was an air quality samples collected with 20-year old SD-40's in consist and under load.
3. Was testing done with each type of engine that is listed as permissible?
4. Was an air quality sample collected from each location in consist (2-4)?
5. Was testing done with engines trailing and with windows open?
6. What controls were used in the testing?
I would like to have an opportunity to have the data collected by your industrial hygiene group reviewed by an independent industrial hygienist. Only then will I be convinced there are no health risks riding in trailing engines.
Yours Truly,
JL Schollmeyer
