| RE: Asbestos Containers | September 24, 1999 |
I have received a inquiry from one of the officers of the United Transportation Union regarding handling of Asbestos Containers on trains in Washington State.
BNSF trains handling garbage from Seattle to Roosevelt are sometimes hauling containers which are filled with asbestos. These containers are covered with a canvas during the trip to Roosevelt. On the return trip the canvas is rolled up.
We have health concerns with regard to the safety of our members who work these trains. The railroad has said that it is "OK" to handle these cars. However, we would like someone not connected with the railroad to insure our members that we are not being exposed to harmful asbestos fibers, especially with the canvas rolled up on the return trip. Is it safe to walk by the trains in the windy Columbia River gorge?
I would appreciate your agency looking into this possible hazardous condition. Copy of RR print out with car information is enclosed. Please advise me of the results of your agencies handling of our complaint. Thanking you in advance. I am,
Sincerely yours,
